Five Minute Friday: "Quiet"

I love the quiet of the mornings.  My neighbors haven't started stirring much, the trash truck hasn't bounced by yet, and the birds are even briefly enjoying the stillness before beginning their morning chorus.  I light a candle, sit in my prayer/reading chair, sip on my morning beverage of choice, grab a pen and paper, and prepare for my time with God.

Ah, such quiet bliss...

Until...

My mind does NOT know quiet like my body does. Even in the stillness of my morning fellowship with God, my mind runs like a wheel-treading hamster juiced up on Red Bull.  If you try to follow the track of my roller coaster thoughts, keep your hands in the car or you'll fall off the ride.

Anyway...

One my goals for the year is to learn how to better settle myself totally in the presence of God. Psalm 131:2 (AMP) says, "Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child [resting] with his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me [composed and freed from discontent]."  That is the goal.  But how?  "But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you" (I Peter 5:10 KJV).  So, as I suffer through the discipline of trying to settle my mind in order to spend quality time with God, His glorious presence settles me so that I can spend more quality time with Him.

Cool, ain't it?

Five Minute Friday: "Disagree"

Whatever happened to agreeing to disagree?  Whatever happened to adult discourse where everyone's opinion matters?  When did we suddenly turn into a bunch of whiny, strident toddlers who lay in the floor and scream for life and everyone in it to be my way or no way?

Look, I have beliefs that I wish everyone shared, but I'm smart enough to know that I can't force someone to share them no matter how big of a fit I pitch.  Besides, who wants to be coerced into belief?  Is it even real belief?  Dale Carnegie is quoted as saying, "Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still."  He's right!

On the flip side, why are those who attempt to engage in honest discourse labeled as "haters" if they hold dissenting opinions from the majority?  OK.  Pull out your thesaurus (or open an app or search engine), and show me where "disagree" and "hate" are synonyms of each other.

You can't do it, can you?

That's what I thought.

If you want to know how to navigate the toddlers without becoming one of them, I'd recommend this book.  It's excellent.

Cutie Patootie: The Weekly Hodgepodge

Join the fun!
Come on over to
for the Hodgepodge link-up!

Something you've seen recently that's 'cuter than a June bug'?

My friend Amy's little girl...

Back in 2019 during my summer staycation was when I first spent time with little miss Eleanor.  She was cuter than a June Bug then.  Just look at her now...

During this year's staycation, I got to spend my first trip to the zoo with Eleanor, who is now 2 1/2.  My how time flies, but isn't she adorable?

Tell us something about where you were and what you were doing in June of 1988? If you weren't born yet, June of 1998. Or if that doesn't work, June of 2008.

In June of 1988, I was working my first summer job at the Jacksonville Senior Citizen's center, getting ready for my junior year of high school and looking forward my first marching band season that fall.  It was a great, fun summer.

A place in your home or outdoor space where you feel 'snug as a bug in a rug'?

My recliner (man, I sound like I'm 83), or as I call it my reading/prayer chair.  It's one of the most comfortable seats in my apartment.  In the winter, I enjoy curling up in this chair with a good book (or even a bad one) wrapped in a blanket.  Most days, I sit in this chair and get before God in prayer. His presence makes the chair even more special.

June is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Month. Do you normally get your 4-5 servings each day? What's a favorite summer dish you make/serve/like to be served-ha! made with one of your favorite summer fruits. A favorite summer dish made with a favorite summer veg? How do you feel about cooking in the summer months?

I don't always succeed at getting my 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.  Raw fruit with yogurt or a slice of cheese works just fine.  Raw veggies with dip or ranch dressing are yummy.  I don't mind cooking during the summer months as long as I've got something ice cold to drink with my meal.

Do you have a summer reading list? If so share a title or two we can add to our own.

For serious reading, I plan to study through James Bryan Smith's Apprentice series:
The Good and Beautiful God
The Good and Beautiful Life
The Good and Beautiful Community

For light reading, I want to read:
The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek by Rhett McLaughlin and "Link" Neal
The Innocence of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton

I may also start rereading the Anne of Green Gables series by L. M. Montgomery.  It's been way too  long since I first read these volumes.

Insert your own random thought here.

A couple of Hodgepodges ago, Miss Joyce asked us about items on our wish list or shopping list.  On my wish list was a robe and slippers, which I did purchase...sort of.  It's a little warm for a robe now, so I purchased a summer nightgown instead and a nice cushy pair of slippers.  As far as the items on the shopping list go, I decided not to purchase the tablet right now.  I removed the last optional app from my Kindle fire and freed up a little space and it seems to have temporarily stabilized it.  I'll remove my needed files from it and keep using it until it won't work anymore--then I'll purchase a different type of tablet.  I'm still working on my search for another pair of athletic shoes (Our Big 5 stores have been awful lately).  As far as the items for my apartment go, I did get the needed items and what I needed to redecorate my "stoop" for summer:
