Thanks to Lisa-Jo Baker at Five Minute Friday for the prompts.
GO!
When I think of a writer, I think of a novelist sitting in a coffee shop writing about the beauty around him. I also think of a hard-nosed news reporter pounding out the hard facts of a story into a keyboard (Yeah, I know a lot of "journalists" don't do that anymore--sad). I also think of diligent students spending hours in a library doing research with pencils sticking out of their ears and a big gulp of something to keep them up long enough to finish.
Then, there's me. I sit at my kitchen table behind a laptop writing to the sound of the washing machine and my neighbor cussing at her toddler. Oh joy.
I was encouraged in my writing by my English 101 professor, Dr. Gerri Holcomb. Success in her class gave me the guts to take on a Mass Communication degree program that required a lot of writing. Now, although I don't yet have a job that remotely uses that, or my other degree, I can't stop. I can't stop putting thoughts into a blog or on paper. It's truly a spiritual experience to share my heart with others. Wow, the kid who used to hate to read now loves to write. Just goes to show that God is a lot smarter than I am.
TIME'S UP!

ReplyDeleteI'm like you in that I also have that somewhat idyllic (or would that be idealistic?) view of a writer in my head. From the outside, we fantastize about how we appear to others, what goes through their minds when we say "I am a writer." Are we the ones they picture sitting in a corner at an indie coffee shop tapping away on our keyboards with five books on a table along with a ratty, well worn notebook? Or do they not even notice? Interesting thing to ponder. I do wonder how we writers look to non-writers. I might have to ask some friends now.
Great post!
They all think we're crazy...and I want to keep it that way. Thanks so much for stopping by, Kim.
DeleteI have to tell you, I am a newspaper columnist and I write short stories. My writing day never goes as planned. I have sticky notes all over the place so I can remember ideas while I am on the run - to soccer games or picking kids up from school or doing laundry or walking the dog or .... Writing never looks like what you think it will. Maybe that's a good thing though. :) Thanks for sharing this - I can so relate! I'm here from FMF
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy my other posts. Have a great weekend.
DeleteWhat a great ending. It is true -- once we start putting words on the page, we just can't stop. I also love the image of one of my favorite writers. :)
ReplyDeleteRuth
Thanks, Ruth. :)
DeleteYou described my image of a writer too, and I don't fit that either. But I love to write and it has literally saved my life. I love the snoopy graphic you chose. Adorable. Writers, unite!
ReplyDeleteAmen, sis!
DeleteHey! Visiting from FMF! I also was surprised by God to find out I'm a writer. Here's to His revealing our gifts to us and the joy they bring!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kelly. I hope that my writing does bring joy eventually.
DeleteDefinitely keep writing. It's a catalyst to your soul.
ReplyDeleteYes it is. Thanks so much for reading.
